When I began the
literacy narrative piece, I didn't know exactly what I was going to say or how
I was going to produce a full length paper about the topic. So I began by
constructing a list of things I wanted to present in this paper. Next I decided
to break apart the different aspects of this paper and elaborate so that I
would be able to have some work to look back on. After breaking apart the paper
and developing the ideas I wanted to, I now had a full structure and guideline
to follow on-hand.
When given this
assignment, I was a bit overwhelmed. I imagined that this would be very
difficult, considering that this was my first college English class. While
first beginning this assignment, I encountered writers block and that
discouraged me from beginning for a few days. But after deciding to create an outline
full of notes and detail, I came to realize that this assignment was something
that almost produced itself. I was excited once I was able to start to write
about my progress with reading and writing and how I have gotten to where I am.
Once I produced my
first draft, I had a really good idea of where I wanted to take this paper. I
was excited that I had created a productive outline that I would be able to
refer to along this entire process. Following turning in our drafts we, the
students of the class, were required to give peer reviews. When I first heard
of this concept I wasn’t too excited to hear that other students in the class
would be reading my work, but after receiving my first peer review my opinions
changed.
The feedback I
received from my classmates was very insightful. I gained a lot of positive
feedback and was eager to edit my piece further. They praised my work as well
as suggested what parts could use more work and detail. The feedback I received
showed me what parts of my paper excelled and what parts lacked in keeping a
reader’s attention. Peer reviews are something I have come to like, and I am
going to miss having those fresh insights on the work I produce.
After editing my
piece, I was excited to submit this assignment. As soon as my work was handed
back to me, I was curious to see what Professor Longhany thought. I was
thrilled to find out that he thoroughly enjoyed my work, and how I have
developed into the writer I am. Receiving this positive feedback from my
professor, motivated me to keep up with my work and try as hard as I could in
that class. Professor Longhany’s feedback for this paper has had a huge impact
on the remainder of the work I had for this class.
The strategies I
deemed necessary for this assignment included creating a structure and outline
that I would work off of. In addition to creating a base, having a draft proved
to be just as helpful. While writing this assignment I evaluated my life
consisting of reading and writing. This led to me gaining a better
understanding of the type of student I am, and allowed me to see the progress I
have made throughout my life with reading and writing.
