Writing Process Reflection

The Writing Process Essay was my favorite assignment this semester. We were instructed to pay close attention to the process in which we prepared, constructed, edited, and submitted an essay. This assignment seemed that it would be interesting, but I thought I would struggle with it because I imagined that it would be difficult to become aware of a process that worked for you while performing just a regularly used process.

While beginning this essay, like many essays, I started to create a structured outline. Usually I am able to construct an effective outline, but since this paper was about one’s writing process I soon found myself stuck. I didn’t know how to prepare a structured guide, when the essay’s content was something that I had to experience while writing the essay. I struggled with this for about 5 days, and then I had an idea.

This idea was to not write about writing but to write about the steps. With this in mind I was able to start making some progress. I began to see some connections that I made while writing each of my pieces. I started off by describing the outlines I use, and then how I usually come to face writer’s block. Ironically I noticed that I even had writer’s block while constructing the process essay. I then started to become aware of the different things I do to overcome writer’s block.

After overcoming writer’s block, I then moved on to the draft. I found it odd to write about a process but once I was able to identify it, it just started to flow. As my essay was coming along, I was started to become happier with my work. After receiving my peers’ feedback, I was shown where I could work harder and in addition my feelings in regard to the rest of my paper were justified. My peers had written down that they enjoyed the paper, and the content and they see how it is an effective process when writing. I was thrilled and ready to fix it up a bit more for my final copy.

After submitting my final piece, I was anxious about what Professor Longhany had to say. I went to his office hours and picked up my paper and the news I received was shocking. The grade for my final paper was a 99% with a note that stated, “This piece is capital A-Awesome. The goal for this assignment is to really get students to think critically about writing processes, and your piece demonstrates a lot of critical thinking. Furthermore, you need to realize you are a damn good writer. The process essay you have delivered here is easily one of the best I have read in a while. Awesome job here”. Receiving this feedback from my professor was great and really encouraged me to take pride in my work.
